Chris Carey's "Swords Against the Moon Men is the only fiction based in an established story line by Edgar Rice Burroughs that improves on what ERB might have given us, for a book with the same plot。 Carey is faithful to Burroughs' writing style and conventions in every respect, and yet he gives important twists to the outcomes that, with Burroughs, would be anticipated。 Reading this book gave me great satisfaction。 It is not a pastiche, but a fine--and now I understand necessary (because I cann Chris Carey's "Swords Against the Moon Men is the only fiction based in an established story line by Edgar Rice Burroughs that improves on what ERB might have given us, for a book with the same plot。 Carey is faithful to Burroughs' writing style and conventions in every respect, and yet he gives important twists to the outcomes that, with Burroughs, would be anticipated。 Reading this book gave me great satisfaction。 It is not a pastiche, but a fine--and now I understand necessary (because I cannot now imagine the series without it)--part of the Moon Men books。 。。。more

Christopher Paul Carey's SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN is an excellent addition to the Burroughs pantheon。 The superb cover and interior illustrations foster the Sword and Planet mood。 A timeline helps the reader keep the different Julians straight, and chronologically places the novel in Burrough's Moon Maid Trilogy。 Almost immediately, nonstop action ensues。 I read it in one sitting on the edge of my seat and at times thought Burroughs himself was speaking。 The author emulates his rapid pace and Christopher Paul Carey's SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN is an excellent addition to the Burroughs pantheon。 The superb cover and interior illustrations foster the Sword and Planet mood。 A timeline helps the reader keep the different Julians straight, and chronologically places the novel in Burrough's Moon Maid Trilogy。 Almost immediately, nonstop action ensues。 I read it in one sitting on the edge of my seat and at times thought Burroughs himself was speaking。 The author emulates his rapid pace and narrative tone。 Moreover, the princess is a warrior and can save the day for herself。 The character Edgar Rice Burroughs appears as do some of our old favorites from Barsoom。 Good fun! 。。。more

Is there really a Christopher Paul Carey? If there really isn’t a Christopher Paul Carey, then Edgar Rice Burroughs is alive and well and writing just as grandly as ever at age 143。About a year ago, I decided to see if there were any Burroughs books I had missed in my Burroughs reading frenzy of the seventies。 There were probably a couple of Tarzan novels, but it was hard to figure out which ones。 There was The Efficiency Expert。 Seeing it on ibooks, I downloaded and read it in a couple of hours, Is there really a Christopher Paul Carey? If there really isn’t a Christopher Paul Carey, then Edgar Rice Burroughs is alive and well and writing just as grandly as ever at age 143。About a year ago, I decided to see if there were any Burroughs books I had missed in my Burroughs reading frenzy of the seventies。 There were probably a couple of Tarzan novels, but it was hard to figure out which ones。 There was The Efficiency Expert。 Seeing it on ibooks, I downloaded and read it in a couple of hours, getting once again caught up in his writing style。 When Jess Terrell got me interested in the Wild Adventures books, I was particularly anxious to read Swords Against the Moon Men。Back in the 70’s I read the original trilogy –loving the Frazetta Ace covers, of course – and liked it - although I did enjoy the Barsoom (Mars) books better for interplanetary adventure。 This book has the flavor of the original series, along with traces and characters from the Barsoom novels。 That’s a good thing; a really good thing。 There’s science fiction, fantasy, sword play, derring-do and the famous ‘I still live!’ attitude。 To describe the plot is to give away twists that you will enjoy when they arrive and I don’t want to do that。 There were a number of nice illustrations running throughout the story which gave it the flavor of the pulps。There were a few problems。 First, I was always taught as a writer to ‘show not tell。’ There is a large amount of telling in Moon Men, especially at the beginning of the book。 I realize it’s done to catch those readers up on the story who may not have read the originals and/or needed to be refreshed on Julian and the moon society, but I wish it could have been done through scenery and dialogue。 Second, there were at least two parts were the plot seemed to be advanced by the author having the main character say something along the lines of ‘yes, what I did shouldn’t have worked, but my enemies were very stupid and fell for it anyway。’ Too deus ex machina, for me, but at the whirlwind pace the story went on, I just noted it and moved on。All in all, this was a rousing story in the grand Burroughs tradition and Christopher Paul Carey did a great job in capturing all things Burroughs。The end of Swords Against the Moon Men set up a sequel that I hope will be forthcoming soon! 。。。more

I am very happy to give Christopher Carey ***** for his book SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN。 This is a book published by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc。 as part of their series of stories based on books and characters written by ERB。 Of course, ERB is most famous for his Tarzan books but some of us ERB fans enjoyed his other series and characters as well。 This one, published just last year (2017), is a sequel to "The Moon Maid" and fits very nicely in the series after that book and before the "The Moon I am very happy to give Christopher Carey ***** for his book SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN。 This is a book published by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc。 as part of their series of stories based on books and characters written by ERB。 Of course, ERB is most famous for his Tarzan books but some of us ERB fans enjoyed his other series and characters as well。 This one, published just last year (2017), is a sequel to "The Moon Maid" and fits very nicely in the series after that book and before the "The Moon Men。" What I really like about what Christopher has done is not only write a "lost" story of one of the Julians ( the Julian family is THE hero of the series), but add a lot to that series。 And, reading it, I could actually feel I was reading a "lost" story by ERB himself, as Christopher writes in the voice of Burroughs (1875-1950), and very much in the spirit with which he wrote, that is, it's an adventure story moving forward at breakneck speed。 Furthermore, I remember reading "The Moon Men" as a kid, on a perfect summer day, sitting by a lake in Wisconsin, but my mind was transported far into he future as the Earthmen battle the invading horde of Moon Men。 Now, it's more than 50 years later, and this time I'm at home, but it's another perfect summer day-- and my mind is back transported to a future when Earthmen are still battling the dreaded Moon Men--and I feel like a kid again。 Thanks so much for that, Christopher Carey! By the way, you don't have to read "The Moon Maid" to enjoy the book, as Christopher gives a recap of what happened before the events of his book。。。。 。。。more

A fun and wild adventureA very worthy addition to the Moon Maid trilogy。 A wild ride that takes our hero from Earth to the Moon and back。 This reads as if ERB himself had written it。 If you like pulp adventure, Planetary Romance of Edgar Rice Burroughs then I highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed。 A fun and wild adventureA very worthy addition to the Moon Maid trilogy。 A wild ride that takes our hero from Earth to the Moon and back。 This reads as if ERB himself had written it。 If you like pulp adventure, Planetary Romance of Edgar Rice Burroughs then I highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed。 。。。more

When it comes to Burroughsian literature written after the death of the Master of Adventure in 1950, the one book I have always used as the "gold standard" against which all others are measured has been "Tarzan And The Valley Of Gold," Fritz Leiber's novelization of the 1966 Mike Henry film。 That has now changed; the new gold standard is Christopher Paul Carey’s “Swords Against The Moon Men,” which builds upon the storyline that Richard Lupoff once called ERB’s greatest contribution to science f When it comes to Burroughsian literature written after the death of the Master of Adventure in 1950, the one book I have always used as the "gold standard" against which all others are measured has been "Tarzan And The Valley Of Gold," Fritz Leiber's novelization of the 1966 Mike Henry film。 That has now changed; the new gold standard is Christopher Paul Carey’s “Swords Against The Moon Men,” which builds upon the storyline that Richard Lupoff once called ERB’s greatest contribution to science fiction。 The reasons for this are simple: “Swords Against The Moon Men” is the product of an author whose credentials as a Burroughs fan/scholar and as a talented storyteller in his own right are long established and quite impeccable, and who - like Lupoff - has devoted great care diligence to remaining true to the original source material。 That effort has paid off mightily, and how! Carey does not try to remake Burroughs' universe in his own image, as has been the case with several of the recent Tarzan books in particular, but instead adheres to and builds upon the source material in such a way that it reads as “authentic ERB” more than any of the other recent ERB-based novels of the past few years。 That has been my main criticism against so many of those other ERB-based novels and short stories: the writers claim to be fans of Burroughs but seem determined to alter his characters to suit their own whims。 I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Create your own characters if those are the stories you want to tell。 Stop mucking about with long-established icons。 When it comes to ERB, Carey gets it - and gets it right。 The end result is a novel that is not only highly entertaining, but stands as a loving tribute to the author whose science fiction and fantasy works have influenced everything from Flash Gordon to Superman to Star Wars。 I have little doubt that Burroughs himself would have greatly enjoyed this novel - and frankly I can think of no better compliment。 Well done, Chris! 。。。more

Why is it so difficult to read as all words are running into each other with typos ,like its a first draft finding it hard to read and enjoy as much as I wanted to 。bit unfortunate and it does need to be rectified 。I was looking forward to this but the printing is a mess that needs sorting out 。words run into each other making it hard to work out 。find it difficult to read like this which is a shame as it is something I was waiting for。

Christopher Paul Carey’s SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN is everything a top-quality pastiche novel should be。 Carey has rigorously studied the original Moon trilogy by Edgar Rice Burroughs and he has the continuity and the timeline down cold。 He has plotted a rousing adventure filled with swordplay and romance in the best tradition of ERB。 Most importantly, Carey is a top-notch writer, bringing a care and quality to his prose, which is ERB-like without beating the reader over the head with self-con Christopher Paul Carey’s SWORDS AGAINST THE MOON MEN is everything a top-quality pastiche novel should be。 Carey has rigorously studied the original Moon trilogy by Edgar Rice Burroughs and he has the continuity and the timeline down cold。 He has plotted a rousing adventure filled with swordplay and romance in the best tradition of ERB。 Most importantly, Carey is a top-notch writer, bringing a care and quality to his prose, which is ERB-like without beating the reader over the head with self-conscious mimicry, that is too-little seen in other attempts at continuing other authors’ beloved characters and series。 Finally, the book itself is a handsome package, with incredible wraparound cover art by Chris Peuler and interior illustrations lovingly rendered in a classic style by Mark Wheatley。 The team at Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc。, have outdone themselves in gathering professional literary and artistic talent for this book; if this is a trend, it can only bode well for future books in their WILD ADVENTURES OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS series! 。。。more
